Post Western Regional High School Championship Results
First and foremost I would like to thank everyone that contributed to getting these two boys to Arizona.

We left on Thursday evening to Arizona, we did not make it to Lake Saguaro until Friday morning about 9 am. The total drive took about 13-14 hours to get there. It was a brutal haul. When we arrived we immediatley dropped the boat in and took off to our first way point. The practice day on Friday was brutally tough. We managed 4 bites all day long and those four fish did not even come close to keeping. We were using morning dawn colors and spooning with gold and silver. We graphed fish everywhere however it was hard to get the fish to go. Friday was a tough practice.

Onto game day which was Saturday the two boys decided to hit a specific way point, it did not produce in the first 20 minutes so we decided to motor up and go. On our second way point we were limited to where we could fish because Fresno State which was leading the College Circuit was on our water. We managed to get two bites throwing the "double shot". The double shot was a rig that I created when I fished the FLW Western Regional College Championship on Folsom Lake. If you need more info about it, FLW published the rig in either the April or May issue of FLW Outdoors. We moved to another hump we did not fish the day before. We had to change up the game plan because we had nothing in the boat. Chris Fenk throws his double shot on a hump that sat in 45 feet of water. While he deadsticked it, he managed his first hook up. That fish bit the bottom plastic, meaning the fish would be more active with bait on the bottom rather than slightly suspended. The boys switched up set ups throwing a nekko rig Ozark Tackle Worm and a Skinny Bear Morning Dawn Tube. Shortly after, Chris Fenk hooked up almost immediatly on the Skinny Bear Tube. He landed our kicker 3.2lb bass. The third keeper came up about 30 minutes later. We moved over to a new spot that looked good on the topo. I idled over it to find the fish on top of the ledge meaning they were still active. The boys caught about 10 fish there that were short but one managed to keep. Now its about 12:30 and the boys have 2 hours to fish left. I find another spot that looked similar to what we fished. We were fortunate to see the fish on the top of the hump again meaning they were active still. Manuel hooks into the final keeper to fill our 5 fish limit.

On the way home we ran into some problems. We got stuck in LA with a terrible rain storm and flooding on the freeway. While we idle forward, I felt a drop/bump feeling, we idle the truck and boat through the flooded freeway and shortly after someone honks and tells us to pull over. I pull over and realize the suspension hanger on the trailer broke and the wheels are rubbing on the fenders. Now we are stuck in Glendale with a broken trailer. AAA took 5 hours to get us a flat bed that would accomodate a trailer. Its now 10pm and we get a hotel to stay. We wake up in the morning and the boys head to Lake Castaic to fish from shore. They didnt catch anything however there were wolfpacks of bass chasing 5 inch baby trout all over the shore. Pretty cool site, the rest off the trip is not very exciting.

In closing the California boys out fished the College guys that day and sacked up a tough and well deserved 7.7 lbs for second place. None of the college teams were able to fill a limit. The first place team won by a landslide and I choose not to share my opinions about my ethics in their strategy. They finished with 14 # even.

I would like to thank all the members of SJB that helped us out, Coyote Bait and Tackle, Skinny Bear, and Anthony (Spot) for taking us. We fished hard and are proud of what we accomplished having never been to Saguaro. I had never caught a bass deeper than 20ft of water before the tournament and I got every single one of my fish out of about 20-35ft. I certainly learned something new in Arizona. It was a memorable trip. I had lots of fun during the trip and it's something I will never forget.
