Fall Bite on Calero

Mon Oct 15, 2018 5:27 pm

Anybody have any insight when Calero will turnover?
What is the predominate baitfish in Calero?
TIA

I would say the lake has turned over or is starting to. I went out there on Friday on my Kayak and caught 5 fish in a couple of hours. 2 little guys, two cookie cutter 1.5lbs, and the biggest at 3.5. Water temps were between 65 and 67 degrees, all 5 fish were caught off of chunk rock points in about 5-8 feet of water. 2 fish on a TX rigged baby brush hog and 3 on a medium diving crank bouncing off the rocks just on the inside of the weed line.

The fish were fairly active and fought harder then expected for their size, the 3.5 felt like a 5 pounder, and splashed the hell out of me when bringing it into the kayak and when releasing it. Seems like they were staging up on the main lake points waiting to move into the cove pockets.

Congrats on the 3.5 pounder. Nice fish.
Thanks for the info. I will try Calero next week

Good Day on Tues 30th: Fall Bite on Calero

Wed Oct 31, 2018 11:04 pm

I had a good day on Calero on Tuesday Oct. 30
Good results on Sexy Shad pattern 1.5 square bill (El Cheap Bass Pro model that always get the hooks tangled up when you cast)
But the fish would blow up on it as if it I were fishing top water. Maybe come equipped with a popper or frog.
No results on drop shot with a little paddle tail minnow
The fish were up against the Tulle points in about 3-5 feet of water
It was windy. I was fishing in the calm water just out of the wind.

Fished in the late afternoon evening in the shade. Off the water at 5:15 pm. Landed about 7 in 2 1/2 hours and missed another 4
The biggest fish came about 5:00 pm and was holding tight to the Tulle.
Came back Wed. Oct 31
Fishing was a lot slower.
Used a KVD Sexy Shad 1.5 square fill. The hooks on this one don't tangle up when you cast
But I was not catching fish like yesterday.
Just a couple medium small.
Tried a frog, got a couple of blow ups.
Tried lipless sexy shad on the bottom off one rocky point with no results
Talked to one guy with sonar. He found a school packed tight off a rocky point.
But could not get them to bite. He was using a jig.
Net/Net: I am a bass fishing newbie, and I got my first Calero Bass
See photo of my biggest. I did not a have a tape measure but guess it is between 16 and 18 inches
But you all know, fish continue to grow in ones imagination

I've changed out all of my treble hooks to single hooks on my bass and trout lures. Less foul hookups (less fish damage), less tangling, easier to store the lures, and virtually no change in the % of strikes to landings. Virtually all that I land have the hook all the way through as opposed to the more frequent problem with trebles where two hooks are only partially through the mouth. Perhaps it helps that I've switched over to the Owner live bait hooks which are really sharp-better quality than the standard treble hooks that come with lures. I use size 1 and 1/0 for trout and larger hooks for bass.

I've dropped treble hooks a long time ago. Not necessarily because I didn't like them, but single hooks are just easier to handle. And as you said, there seems to be no difference in fish landings numbers.

Went to Calero on T-Day for 1.5 hours
No luck
Water down about 4-5 feet
Tulles high and dry so no cover
Fished deep with sexy shad lipless crank bait - no luck
Fished 1.5 similar crank bait no luck
Very little wind

The recent rain might've raised the water levels. Not sure if they're done schooling up. I went a few weeks ago, two trips, about 10 fish each time, they were definitely biting. Calero is always best fishing finesse imo.
