Nice catches Glenn.

Where exactly is Monterey Dunes Colony? I Googled and found something near Moss Landing/Castroville.

Same place you're at?

Hey G3,

Yes, that should be the place. There is a string of condo's that line the beach in this gated community. Fisherman refer to is as "MDC". There is a state park beach access parking lot in the same area. If you turn onto Molera Road from Highway 1 look for Monterey Dunes Way on the ocean side of the road. It looks like nothing but artichoke fields but if you continue down that road it dead ends into the state park parking lot.
If I'm not mistaking there is only one paved road you can turn down once you get on Molera Road on the ocean side.

Hope that helped!

Hello All,
Fished Monterey Dunes Colony. Found the perch almost to the end of the condo's. Caught 4 nice ones and lost about the same. Didn't get but 3-4 bites on the way there. I started to lose hope when I caught the biggest of the 4 I kept. Carolina rigged motor oil with red flake. I haven't totally stopped fishing for perch. Switching between the striper and perch, stripers and perch.....

Glenn

do you chop off the tail of your grubs or leave it on glenn?

I leave the tail on my grubs. I also use a #2 baitholder hook. I use to use smaller 4's and #6 hooks but I spent more time catching small fish and spent a lot of time removing the hooks from deep in their throats. The #2 hook lets me know the fish are there tapping my grub but it also tells me there are small fish around. Where there's small fish there are big fish.

I've fished the same set up for over 30 years, carolina rig with a grub, and have been very successful. Believe me, I've tried every variation of rigs, hook size, baits and I alway go back to the carolina rig with #2 hook and Kalins perch grub, Motor Oil with Red Flake.

This set up allows you to carry minimal extras (hooks, swivels, beads and egg sinker) and lets you keep on moving. If you break off or snag large seaweed and have to cut your line you'll be back in business in no time with a carolina rig.

I like to keep is simple......but productive! Hope this helps.

Oh ya, I've experimented nose hooking with a mosquito hook and really found no difference in my opinion with hook up ratio....

I've been having a hard time finding the stripers so I've been flopping back and forth between the perch and striper outings. Went to Monterey Dunes for perch today. Fished the minus tide as it started to come in.....

Tamster,

I was out there a couple of days ago. There was a lot is seaweed all over the place. May have cleaned up but you may want to have a plan B in case it's still dirty. The perch are in pretty close. Cast out like you normally would. If you don't get bit then reel in about 10 feet. and let it sit. If you don't get bit then reel it in another 10 feet. Keeping doing this all the way to shore. If you don't get bit.....move! If you're fishing with grubs, retrieve real slow. Fan cast and if you don't get but then move.

Hope this helps.

Tamster,

I was out there on Saturday by the rail road bridge. I was fishing next to a guy using grass shrimp. We each caught a load of perch and we each caught a fatty in the 2lb range. Was that you? I was the guy in the shorts and back pack....... If that was you, I got over 30 fish that day. It was the best perch fishing so far this year. Let me know if that was you. The guy offered me some of his grass shrimp but I was good to go with my motor oil grub.....

Glenn

Manresa Beach today for another 25+ fish day. All on motor oil w/red flake grubs. No stripers seen but a lot of striper fisherman out and about. I like fishing the local monterey waters but the beaches along Watsonville/Santa Cruz area have a lot of nice holes with connecting troughs. You got to be on the move to find them but when you do....easy limit!

Glenn,

That wasn't.. I was there on Sunday and it was great!! I was also fishing near the railroad bridge!! I was using the motor oil grub with red flakes and changing to my sand worm. Perch was going crazy on every cast!! I will be out there again this weekend before I head out to new York for a week..
