 Re: Perch Fishing
that's usually what i do...vans and keep my eyes on the waves.
but, i've been looking at some waders and i've seen some on ebay for like 15-20$.
i'd give them a shot just to get a bit into the water and or not worry about getting my shoes wet. nothing funner than wet, cold, soggy feet at the beginning of the day!
they're lightweight and have neoprene boots. you can just put on some larger, cheap water socks over them and you're good to go!

 Re: Perch Fishing
I fished Tioga Street north almost to Fort Ord on the incoming tide yesterday. I didn't get not so much as a nibble. The conditions were right. The water was on the rise. No debris in the water. All was good just no fish to be found. Sorry for posting pictures of sunsets but just when you thought you've seen the perfect one something pops up.
As the sun sets, things change about every 5-10 minutes. The way color works (light rays) is amazing to me no matter how many sunsets I've seen. I'm also amazed at what an iPhone camera can capture. This will have to do since I didn't catch any fish!

 Re: Perch Fishing
FnF, Between myself and three other guys we covered beaches from Carmel to Watsonville/Santa Cruz. No big fish were caught and no big numbers. Just small perch here and there. Tough fishing this last week! Good luck and post some pics!!

 Re: Perch Fishing
I'm out here now and there are no bites at all! The swells are pretty heavy but I figure that's good for bigger perch. Talked to a local where I bought shrimp and he said this would be weather he'd fish in if he wasn't working. Said he's had good fishing but over by New Brighton beach. Tried out a blue/chrome with tail kastmaster at the break but no bites.
Plus I'm all wet. My rain jacket is keeping me dry inside but it retains water on the outter layer. Pants are doing well. They're my motorcycle rain pants and they dry off quick. Funny. The jacket was $150 and the pants $30. Go figure.
Taking a coffee break in my truck while I bait fish.
If it clears up a bit over the weekend I may come back.

 Re: Perch Fishing
Thanks Glenn.
A true fisherman catches fish though, haha!
Had two really good hits but the force was strong with the skunk!
Want to get out there soon. I'm on a mission!

 Re: Perch Fishing
Keep at it. I fished three days last week and have nothing to show for it but a good walk and a picture of an amazing sunset. Haaahaa! That's the fun for me is to get out to different beaches and find the fish. Don't get me wrong I love to catch but the hunt is just as important. The contour of the beaches change so much that you have to do your "homework" . That means getting out there on a low, minus, tide to see where the holes, troughs and humps are. All those places hold fish but some are not as easy to see what the tide is in. Check out the "marina beach striper" thread. I'll post a picture in just a minute of a trough which is important to understand for both striper and perch fishing.

 Re: Perch Fishing
FnF, I've talked to guys who have been fishing from Seaside to Santa Cruz. Nobody is landing the big barred perch. I fished Rio Del Mar beach last week and didn't get a bite for my 4 hours of effort! That's why its called "fishing." Haaahaaaa.

 Re: Perch Fishing
I haven't had much time to fish because of OT at work but I have been getting some reports in. Nobody seems to know where the big perch are hanging out at. This is supposed to be prime time for the perch but it's been slow out there on the beaches. We are already into February and all I've done is pick up a nice one here and there. I know last month a couple of guys actually got into the school of 3 lb fish so I know they're out there some where....just not at the end of my pole. I'm hoping to get out on Friday. If successful I'll be posting some pics.

 Re: Perch Fishing
I heard the Marin area is producing larger fish pretty frequently.
