Re: New Surf Rod: Your Opinions
Hey beautiful setup you have there. Just wanted to mention about the spooling of line on the reel. It seems that you will get many diff opinions at tackle shops on how much line to put on. An older well respected surfcaster told me that what he does is basically fiil the spool to to the lip which is basically too much line. Then he starts using and casting. You will get further casts this way but also are more prone to wind knots especially with braid. Anyway he justs cuts out the wind knots until he no longer gets any. That way he maximizes the amount of line on the spool. People with more skill will probably be able to cast without getting any wind knots with a fuller spool than someone with less skill. Eventually after a season of casting you may find that you don't have enough line on the spool and your casts are being greatly affected. Then u have 3 choices. 1 Respool with new line 2 Take off line and fill spool with more backing and then respool old line. 3 Take off old line and put on spare spool, then take same old line and spool onto another spare spool. Now your old line will be on top of spool. Add more backing and respool old line onto original reel. Now you are using the new part of your line. You can get 2 seasons out of a spool of braid this way. It can save you a buch of money especially if you have many reels. Lee

Re: New Surf Rod: Your Opinions
Lee you hit the nail on the head....this 1/4 inch...1/8 inch....and so on is old school mono talk that has been around forever. I spooled my reels full after reading some East Coast forums and it made all the difference in casting distance. Yes, you certainly do have to be a little more "aware" of the line on your spool and to make sure you take the slop out once in a while. Great advice Bro!
