Hi Guys/Gals,
I've been spending time on the forebay. Been getting reports from friends that the perch bite is getting as the weather cools. Hoping to get out this weekend to give a report and some pics

Second hand reliable reports are coming in. Fish are spotty but they are all over. Perch fishing is a great way to burn some time especially when nothing else is going on. Relatively simple set up and very easy to do. Great way to get you kid(s) started fishing because it's a high percentage that you will catch something.

Thanks for checking in. Hoping to get out this weekend and willl post pics..... dmun keeps diverting my attention to the San Luis stripers!!!!!!!! Haaaaahaaaaa!

Friend of mine sent an e-mail with attachment....Yes, it was a picture of a nice size perch. Perch fishing is only going to get better as the winter months and new year approaches. Hit the beach when things slow down at the lakes. The ocean is like the "sure catch" pond!!!!!

Glenn, thanks for the saltwater update. I like the "sure catch" recommendation and may have to pack an ocean rod just in case the steelies aren't hitting in the river. Ever try any steelhead fishing in the Salinas River? (8-|

Iron Man,
That river doesn't flow. The water pools near the mouth for the majority of the year. The only time it flows is during the winter rains. When that happens, all the junk and mud flow out of the river and into the ocean.

To answer your question, "Yes" I have seen small striped bass in there near the mouth. However, I heard you can be cited for fishing the freshwater portion of the river. Usually what happens when the striper run starts, late May, is that very little freshwater is running out of the mouth and into the ocean. Big striped bass have been caught at the mouth of the Salinas River....along the beach.

I'm not realy sure how those little stripers make it into the pool but they are there. The only time I've seen them is after the winter rains when the water has a chance to clear up.

Salinas River is much further south....

Bigger perch are starting to show up along the Monterey Shoreline. Ran into a guy fishing over the weekend. He was using live grass shrimp....#1 perch/striper bait. He nailed 2 perch in the 3 lb range. For a perch that is huuuuggee!!!!. I caught a couple in the 1.5 range but had to really work for those guys. They are out there just have to put the time in. Keep moving...even if you're a bait fisherman.

Regular or store bought shrimp for the seafood section will work for bait. It's been cold so dress warm.

Hello All!
Managed to get out for a few hours yesterday. Water was perfect, weather was great, water was clear of any debris. Walked out to the Sand Plant. Found good size sand crab beds. I knew that I would hit the big 3lb perch for sure.

Worked all the beds real good. Only managed to land two small, the size of my hand, perch. Oh well, it beats not fishing at all. The fish are out there just have to find them. Hoping to get out this weekend. I'll post if I do.

Thanks for checking in and reading the post!

Glenn
