Re: A Sad Day for Striped Bass
It's an issue that has been raging on in the saltwater fishing community for a while. I too remember when 30 lb. and 40 lb. stripers were common, but now those fish are rare. Striped bass populations have been on the decline, with no steady increase in the numbers of salmon. Most knowledgeable anglers realize that eradicating the striped bass will not have an effect on the salmon population, and that record water diversion is the real problem. Almond farmers in the Central Valley have been reaping record profits at the expense of our fish. They argue that the salmon fishery is unsalvageable and not worth the restoration effort, and this settlement is only a ploy by the agricultural industry to have easier access to our water by getting another species of fish out of the way.
We shall wait and see how this will play out for the other species of fish and fishermen in the future.
